Last week, the Women of Color within the Time’s Up Movement released an official statement boycotting R. Kelly. The hashtag #MuteRKelly was created, asking music platforms like Apple Music and Spotify to remove the artists music. They also asked of the participation of RCA records, the label that produces and distributes Kelly’s music, Ticketmaster, who sell tickets to Kelly’s shows, and the Greensboro Coliseum Complex, where Kelly has an upcoming show.
The organization demanded “appropriate investigations and inquires into the allegations of R. Kelly’s abuse made by women of color and their families for over two decades now.”
On Wednesday, Spotify removed R. Kelly’s music from its playlists as a part of the new “Hate Content & Hate Conduct” policy. Users of the music app will still be able to find Kelly’s music, but the company will no longer actively promote the artist or his music.
