On Monday morning, Barack and Michelle Obama were honored with their very own portraits at the National Portrait Gallery, apart of the Smithsonian in Washington D.C.
Both Michelle and Barack spoke on their beautiful paints that will be added to the collection of presidential portraits. The former first lady says she hopes the portrait will inspire young black women when they see “someone who looks like them” hanging in the gallery. “I’m thinking about the young people, particularly girls and girls of colour who in years ahead will come to this place and they will look up and see an image of someone who looks like them…I know the kind of impact that will have on their lives, because I was one of those girls.”
Obama charmed the audience as he praised Baltimore-based artist Amy Sherald, for “so spectacularly capturing the grace and beauty and intelligence and charm and hotness of the woman I love.”
Obama’s portrait was painted by Kehinde Wiley – an artist best known for his vibrant, large-scale paintings of African-Americans.
I think we can all agree, the portraits are just amazing!
