Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King was an impeccable leader and became one the most renowned leaders of The Civil Rights movement. From the Birmingham Campaign, the establishment of The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), the Washington March, winning the Nobel Peace Prize and Time Magazine’s ‘Man of the Year’ in 1964, Dr. King’s impact still speaks volumes to this day.
Dr. King’s legacy has inspired civil rights activists for the past forty years and organizations such as the NAACP have carried on his work on behalf of all people of color and have endeavored to keep his dream alive for future generations. We can always look to Dr. King’s actions – and, especially his words – to remind us of what we are fighting for and why we must continue to fight. If we ever get sidetracked or discouraged, we can remember Dr. King’s closing remarks at the NAACP Emancipation Day Rally in 1957:
“I close by saying there is nothing greater in all the world than freedom. It is worth going to jail for. It is worth losing a job for. It is worth dying for. My friends, go out this evening determined to achieve this freedom which God wants for all of His children.”
In honor of Dr. King’s selfless acts of service to bring awareness and justice for all the American people, we ask you to be like Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King and do something for those who cannot. Click the link to find out ways you can volunteer in your community this MLK Day!
