Over the most recently years, Mattel has gotten out of their normal Barbie molds and have began using the Barbie brand to promote the diversity of beauty seen around the world. Since the launch of their Barbie Fashionistas line, they have created more than 170 diverse dolls.
Their newest additions to the family include a doll with vitiligo and a doll with hair loss. In a statement, Mattel said the company wants to show “a multi-dimensional view of beauty and fashion,” through their Barbie Fashionistas line. When the company revealed the prototype for the vitiligo doll on Instagram last year, it became their most-liked post ever. When it comes to the doll with hair loss, they said, “If a girl is experiencing hair loss for any reason, she can see herself reflected in the line.”
Last year, Barbie’s were introduced with prosthetic legs and wheelchairs.
